3. Walk in to 5 commercial offices and offer a free demo EVERY day.

Do this for 3 Weeks straight and I guarantee you will have more work than you can handle.

When Internet guys start throwing around technical terms it can sound like a different language. Sometimes they use that as a sales tactic or sometimes they just forget that the average business owner doesn’t deal with this stuff day in and day out. Regardless, there are few terms you need to understand in order to make smart decisions and avoid being held hostage by some of the more unscrupulous web designers and marketers.

What is a Domain?

A domain is a unique address that people can type in to view your website. It typically ends in .com, net or .org. An example would be www.BigWestMarketing.com.

It’s also called a website address or a URL. It’s important to understand that this is NOT your website. It is simply an address that a website can sit on.

You can think of a domain like a street address: 123 Happy Drive and the website is the house that the address is assigned to.

You never permanently own a domain. You pay to register your domain each year through companies like GoDaddy.com. It’s more like a lease than a purchase. Once it is registered to you, it will remain assigned to you unless you let it expire or sell it to someone else.

A lot of people get this confused with hosting, however registering a domain and hosting a domain are two different things. The confusion comes in because most companies will offer both domains and hosting.

What is Hosting?

If you have a website you will need pay a hosting company to provide space on their server, this allows people to access the web site on the Internet. Hosting is just a space you are renting on the Internet so that your website can be viewed by everyone.

You can think of your hosting like the lot that your house sits on. The Hosting is the space you rent for your website to sit on.

What is a Website?

Ok, you know what a website is. We all look at websites every day. But how does it play into this conversation. It’s not the domain address, its not the hosting space. It’s all the words, pictures, videos, links etc. Its all the stuff people can see and interact with. As mentioned before, you can think of your website like a house.

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Soon he appeared from the sky,

A sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,

Then I noticed two small logos on his shiny red sled.

Could it be real?

Amazon? Google? They’re everywhere?

“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!

To the Amazon Fulfillment Warehouse! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! Come Robots! dash away all!”

So up to the housetop they flew with 8 little Drones trailing behind.

With the sleigh full of toys, I couldn’t wait for him to read my wish I left in the stockings—

I heard prancing on the roof,

And soon I heard St. Nicholas come crashing down the chimney.

He was dressed like he does in every story or movie I’ve seen,

No bag of toys just 8 little Drones hovering around him with packages attached,

He pointed to the tree and a few Drones flew to the floor to release some gifts.

He soon went to the stockings and pulled out my note,

He read it aloud with that deep cheery voice,

“Can you get me Ranked high on Google this year? That’s all I want for Christmas?”

And then he belted out a high-pitched jolly laugh;

His stomach jiggled,

And I soon realized that was a horrible request;

He rubbed his big round belly and said “Give him the special gift.”

A small Drone flew over with a tiny box, and he gently placed it in my stocking.

He crawled back up the chimney and his small Drones followed,

I waited until I heard him fly from my rooftop;

And I soon ran over to see what he possibly could have left,

I pulled out the tiny gift and begin carefully unwrapping it;

His laugh still plagues my ears,

My eyes widen when I spot what was in this tiny box,

And soon I’m reminded that our lives are a gift and shouldn’t be taken for granted,

Such a silly thing that I asked for when there’s so much more important aspects to life.

As I grin from ear to ear looking at this photograph that takes me back to a moment in my life where nothing else mattered,

When I couldn’t wait to be an adult and now I wish I could go back.

I can remember that day, that radiant Red Schwinn, and that giant mud puddle that covered me from head to toe in brown sludge.

My mother screaming, my feelings of euphoria, and my satisfaction with life,

Thank you for that memory.

Okay, so I get this question a lot and people get worried when they enter their businesses into Moz Local or the Yext Business Scan to see if their Listings are correct. I’m going to let you in on a little secret…the majority of the results will ALWAYS be incorrect! Why, because they’re trying to gain you as a client.

I’m going to use my personal side business as an example.  I am currently Ranking #1 in the Maps and Organically for my main keyword and main city, however Moz and Yext are telling me I have several crucial errors which is a lie.

When you look above you clearly see “No Listing found on Yelp”  – Guess what?  That’s a Lie…see below

Here is what Yext is telling me:

And it goes on to show further problems…If I would see this and not know any better I’d think “Oh my God I need to fix this!  And I’ll just buy their program.”

The point that I’m trying to make is please don’t trust any site that is trying to sell you their program and when they offer that Free Business Scan of course it’s going to come up with Errors.  How else are they going to get you to buy their program? Obviously when I entered my business it showed all sorts of errors that were wrong and I’m not worrying because I know they are lying and I also know it doesn’t matter because I’m #1.

A part of what SEO Clients pay us for is we do get you into Yext and Moz any how so that’s just part of the program that we offer.  I hope the above example kind of gives you an idea of what these companies try to do to catch your attention.
