Maybe you have already heard about the massive WordPress attacks that have been going on. You probably know that WordPress is a website/blogging platform that is preferred by small business owners because it is easy to use and very SEO friendly.

The problem is that when you first install WordPress it leaves some pretty significant security holes. Basically one or more illegal “botnets” or software programs will try thousands of username and password combinations every second.

How To Protect Yourself

There are several things you can do to protect yourself. If you are one of my clients and are currently on my hosting plan then all of this has been done for you and you have nothing to worry about.

1. If your username is “admin” then create a new user, set the rights to administrator. Then log out and log back in and delete the admin account.

2. Install the Login Lockdown plugin. This will lock out the botnets after 5 attempts.

3. Backup your site. Call your hosting company and have them step you through the backup process. All of my sites and my client sites are backed up every week automatically. I suggest you do the same.

4. Change your password. Use 8 characters with numbers, symbols – NO WORDS FROM THE DICTIONARY.

5. If you are on a shared server then you may experience slowdowns as the botnets bog down the system and your site (bad for SEO). You may want to consider a dedicated server option. All of my client’s sites are on a dedicated server and run at top speeds (many times 5 to 10 times faster than shared servers).

It is very important for Carpet Cleaners and all website owner’s to sign up for Google Authorship. This is how Google determines if your web site content is original or duplicated from another website. It will also allow your picture to show up in the search results.

1. Go sign in to your Google + account

2. Search for Google Authorship

3. Enter a personalized email address such as yourname@yourwebsite.com. Don’t enter a gmail, yahoo, hotmail or any other generic email address. It must be associated with your site. If you don’t have a personalized email then you need to contact your webdesigner/host and get one.

4. Signup for Authorship and verify the email.

The short answer is yes, but does that mean if you start a Facebook page and start making posts that your rankings are going to skyrocket? Or maybe just get a bunch of ‘Likes’ from my friends and family.

Well, there is more to it than that. What Google really wants to see is serious activity on your website from Facebook. So lot’s of active Facebook users going from your Facebook page or posts to your website on a regular basis.

The big question is, how do you get people interested in your website while they are surfing Facebook? After all, people are not on Facebook to find home services. They are on there to hang out, have fun and check out information that truly interests them. Sorry, but carpet cleaning isn’t fun or interesting to the average Facebook user.

So it means you need to rethink what kind of things you post. This is a new concept for most cleaners including myself, but the experiments I have been doing are pretty revealing and I’m just getting started.

The first thing I do is put myself in the shoes of my favorite customer. In my case, and probably yours, that will be a homemaker. If I was to imagine myself standing in their home looking around to see what they see, what would it be? Kids, dogs and food. (for example). — Forget about dirty carpet for now.

Kids, dogs and food are probably recurring themes that appear throughout their Facebook conversations too, right? Ok, so now we know what will grab their attention. You need to start making posts that are related to kids, dogs and food.
Now, how do you get them to go to your website from your Facebook posts? It’s actually pretty simple. You create content on your blog that has to do with things they like. So you will need to change your thinking once again. Blog about interesting topics relating to: you guessed it – kids, dogs and food.

“But Joe, my site is about carpet cleaning not kids and dogs.”

Very true, but if people start coming to your site to read interesting information about kids then Google sees you have traffic coming from Facebook and if they ‘like’ or ‘share’ your article then Google sees that too. Remember we are not marketing to customers with Facebook. We are creating signals that Google sees. The side effect may be some extra cleaning jobs, but that is not our ultimate goal here.

This is the new SEO and it’s not just with Facebook, but all social media sites including Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube and Google +. I personally am still in the beginning stages of this new revolution, but I’m working hard to figure out what works best. All of my SEO clients are slowly being brought into the system as I progress.
